Revisit any one of our course texts and write down as many rhetorical strategies and appeals you can observe.

Using the Ted Talk Video by Safwat Saleem, these are the rhetorical strategies I found in his work.

Logos

  • Recounting the Ancient Greek Writer Homer’s stories and the incorrect statements involving colors (sea as wine red, purple sheep, green faces)
  • Ancient texts mentioning very little color and the theory behind it that they’ll only recognize a color when they can recreate it themselves
  • Statistics about favoritism (reviewers finding more spelling errors if you’re black, etc)
  • Library statistics (11% of childrens books having poc characters)

Pathos

  • Animations of the speaker’s experiences (his dream of forgetting his name, etc)
  • Voiceover of ”have you forgotten your name?”
  • Childhood stories (running to the bathroom, etc)
  • Continuing to challenge “normal” and not giving up
